The University of Western Ontario Faculty Association (UWOFA) stands with students in opposition to the OSAP changes recently announced by the provincial government. The announcement includes cuts to grants for low-income students, a move that will force those in need to take on more student debt. “Cutting needs-based grants flies in the face of affordable post-secondary education,” said UWOFA president Dan Belliveau. “The provincial government should make it easier for students to go to university, not harder and more stressful.”

Bill 47 will leave contract faculty members vulnerable

UWOFA is concerned that recent improvements to labour laws will be abandoned with yesterday’s passage of Bill 47, Making Ontario Open for Business Act. Last year, part-time workers won the much-needed protection of equal hourly pay for doing the same work as their full-time counterparts. Bill 47 will cancel that important gain, along with other provisions that prioritized fairness for workers such as consolidating bargaining units and a minimum wage increase to $15 an hour in 2019.
