On the recommendation of your Librarians and Archivists’ negotiation team, we have stepped away from bargaining and have cancelled meetings scheduled for August 30th and September 3rd as the Employer has shown an unwillingness to make any reasonable proposals.

On the recommendation of your Librarians and Archivists’ negotiation team, the Board of Directors of UWOFA has unanimously approved a formal application for conciliation with the Ministry of Labour.

On July 31, your negotiating team will ask the UWOFA Board of Directors to request the appointment of a conciliation officer from the Ontario Ministry of Labour. If appointed, the conciliation officer will join both sides at the bargaining table to help them reach an equitable agreement.

In May of this year, your negotiating team attempted to reach a quick settlement with the employer in advance of the province’s wage cap legislation. Unfortunately, the employer scuttled this proposal, and traditional negotiations began on June 11.  The two sides have met 5 times so far with 5 more meetings on the schedule before talks pause for the summer. The current four-year contract expired on June 30, 2019.

Your UWOFA-LA negotiating team, led by chief negotiator Johanna Weststar (DAN Department of Management & Organizational Studies), began negotiating a new collective agreement for librarians and archivists on Tuesday, June 11. Several half-day sessions are scheduled with the employer this month before bargaining pauses in July until mid-August. The current four-year contract expires June 30, 2019.

Your negotiating team will bargain as usual this round after the administration informed us they could not come to the table in time to reach a streamlined deal before wage restraint legislation is introduced by the provincial government. 

Employer not responding to streamlined bargaining proposal - Vol. 5, No. 2

Due to potential upcoming provincial legislation regarding public sector wage restrictions, your negotiating team is attempting to meet with the employer to propose a streamlined offer designed to reach a fair compensation deal for librarians and archivists by the end of May. Unfortunately at this time the employer has not committed to meet with us to reach a timely settlement.
