Librarians & Archivists Stewards

Librarians and archivist stewards are an integral part of UWOFA with two primary roles: to be a familiar face for members to contact if they have questions about the Librarians and Archivists Collective Agreement, and to monitor the implementation of the Collective Agreement.

The Librarians & Archivists Stewards Committee meets on a regular basis to discuss matters important to the bargaining unit, and to coordinate communications between librarian and archivist members and UWOFA’s Board of Directors.

The introductory Service clause (Cl.5) of the UWOFA-LA Collective Agreement's Responsibilities of Members article states that "Each Member shall be entitled and expected to accept an equitable share of administrative responsibilities" with respect to the Service component (nominally 5% to 15%) of their position. Furthermore, it states that these responsibilities can be fulfilled by "participating in the work of the University through membership on, for example, Library, Faculty, School, Department, Senate, Association and University committees."   Moreover, Members are encouraged to "participate in the work of professional or scholarly associations, editorial boards and academic and professional journals and other service to the external community".  But what do those broad parameters mean in practical terms?  Under ORI (Western Libraries' Organizational Renewal Initiative), some service opportunities have vanished while other, new ones, have emerged.  So what does qualify as Service for Members? Where does Professional Practice end and Service begin?  What are some the of the engaging possibilities for Members to meet their  Service requirements? The panel will unravel  these and other issues, and tackle your questions in a lively, interactive session at the end.
