About John

John Ciriello is a tenured professor in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology in the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry. He joined the faculty as an assistant professor in 1981 and was promoted to full professor in 1989 while an MRC Scientist (predecessor to the current Canada Research Chair) and later as a career investigator with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

He has served on or chaired numerous national and international committees related to his field of study, including IUPS Commissions, the Canadian Physiological Society, the Society for Neuroscience, and on grant committees including MRC of Canada, HFSO and HSFC, NIH Study Sessions (USA), OGS committee, and the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research, as examples.

John has been an invited lecturer at institutions worldwide, including several countries behind the "Iron Curtain" of years ago. His fondest memory from these trips is having a 24-hour "babysitter" for four days while in the former USSR.

At Western, he has previously served as acting chair and undergraduate studies chair in Physiology. John's UWOFA service includes Board of Directors, Executive Committee, Pension and Benefits Committee, Salary Committee, JOHSC and Western Excellence Awards Committee, and as a member of the OCUFA Board of Directors.

When not at work or travelling, you can find John in his garden taking care of his collection of over 90 different varieties of hostas, including several new varieties that he has introduced, or sitting in the gazebo watching them grow while having a coffee (and cookie) with his cats Ty, Sidney, and Lance.
