UWOFA stands with survivors of gender-based violence

The University of Western Ontario Faculty Association (UWOFA) was shocked and saddened to hear reports of multiple sexual assaults and gender-based violence that occurred on campus during Orientation Week. We stand in solidarity with the survivors, and all students struggling to cope in the aftermath of these horrifying acts.

Everyone deserves to be safe on campus. Safety should not be contingent on gender. It is imperative that Western follow a trauma-informed, survivor-centered investigative process.

The Centre for Research & Education on Violence Against Women has created online training material in regards to responding to disclosures of sexual violence on campus. The training is available here.

UWOFA also supports the planned student-led walkout this Friday, Sept. 17. Association members who are not teaching that afternoon are encouraged to join the event on University College Hill at 12 pm, and consider accommodation for students who leave to join the event.
