In Memoriam: Colleagues remember Olds's sense of humour, dedication to teaching, willingness to defend just cause

The Department of Mathematics mourns the passing of Dr. Vicki Olds. Vicki received her PhD from the Department of Management Sciences at Waterloo in 1991 and then started her career at Western in 1994. She taught mathematics, statistics, actuarial science and operations research: in doing so, a huge number of students over the years were part of her classroom.  Those students will remember her kindness and compassion as well as her devoted efforts to make sure they learned some math.

Vicki worked closely and collaboratively with faculty at the affiliated colleges as well as Western in her ongoing role as course coordinator. She was also a patient mentor to a great many graduate student TAs and junior instructors who had their first teaching experiences under her supervision. The members of the teams she led spoke of her with respect and affection.

Her colleagues in Mathematics will remember her dry sense of humour, her dedication to teaching, and her consistent willingness to defend a just cause. She was an active UWOFA member from the start and served tirelessly on many of its committees and in roles which most recently included UWOFA Secretary. She also enjoyed playing the bassoon in the New Horizons Band and singing bass in the Pro Musica Choir.

She will be forever missed by the Western community.
