Bargaining Bulletin: Librarians and archivists vote 97% in favour of strike mandate. Vol. 5, No. 8

The UWOFA-LA membership has voted 97 per cent in favour of strike action should the UWOFA Board decide it is necessary. A strong strike vote gives your negotiating team more leverage at the table and demonstrates to the administration that UWOFA members are firmly behind the work of the team. A ‘yes’ vote does not mean that there will be a strike. Your negotiating team is committed to reaching a deal with the administration during conciliation.

Next Steps

Greg Long, a provincially appointed conciliator who also served as conciliator during faculty negotiations last fall, will join your negotiating team and the administration at the bargaining table in September. If the two sides are unable to reach an agreement, the conciliator could file a “no board” report with the Ontario Ministry of Labour, 17 days after which a lockout or strike is legally possible. UWOFA remains hopeful that a fair and equitable settlement can be reached through the conciliation process.

Many thanks to all those who helped to organize the strike vote, and to members of UWOFA’s  current negotiating team, who work so hard on our behalf.

Please stay tuned for updates in additional Bargaining Bulletins in the weeks to come.
